17 Sep 2014

Between 9 and 12 September 2014, The Technology Transfer Office of MU together with other partners from the South Moravian Region held the prestigious international conference ICTPI 2014 (International Conference on Technology Policy and Innovation). The event was part of a series of conferences reaching back to 1997. They provide a meeting ground for the representatives of academic, business and public sectors to discuss application of results of research and development to support regional economic development.

The ICTPI conferences already took place e.g. in Macao, Porto, New Delhi or Bogotá. The ICTPI project has returned to East-Central Europe after nine years. This year's conference took place on the premises of the Faculty of Science of MU and its topic was: Building Sustainable R&D Centers in Emerging Technology Regions. The aim of the conference was i.a. to contribute to an environment which supports successful technology transfer – practical application of university research results and inventions. The event took place under the auspices of the Lord Mayor of Brno, the rector of Masaryk University and the British Embassy in Prague.

There were leading experts from all over the world and specialists from the South Moravian Region among the speakers. Some of the many experts were e.g.:

  • David Gibson, the founder of ICTPI, expert on innovation, scientist working at the University of Texas
  • Manuel Heitor, Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, the former Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education
  • Gerd Korutem, Professor in the field of IT at the Open University, expert on digital technology for solving social problems in the area of energetics, traffic, healthcare and education
  • Juan M. Sanchez, the vice-president of research at the University of Texas, expert in the field of electronic, structural and thermal properties of materials
  • Jane Davies, former executive director of the Manchester Science Parks, the director of Northern Ireland Science Park in Belfast
  • Dalibor Štys, former Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic
  • Markus Dettenhofer, executive director of the Central European Institute of Technology CEITEC
  • Martin Bareš, vice-rector of MU for development
  • Ladislav Chodák, investor in the field of IT and co-founder of the UNIS company

Besides the official programme there were also other accompanying events. The guests could take guided tours of Brno, enjoy a welcome party in the famous Villa Tugendhat or the end-of conference banquet on the premises of the Brno Observatory and Planetarium together with a projection in the new Digitarium.

We are glad to say that the guests' feedback was very positive. The organizational team lead by Prof. Jan Slovák received many positive responses, e.g. from Massimo Monteleone, Professor of the Italian University of Foggia, who wrote: „Thanks for the warm welcome and hospitality by you and the whole organizer team. I have learned the lesson: Brno is a very interesting city with fine arts, villas and buildings, planetarium and opera house, lots of activities and very good people. Universities and research institutions are a wonderful diamond embedded in this land. I will make sure that we can start an intense collaboration with the Masaryk University.“
