TTO Representatives Attended the Second Year of Prague.bio Conference 2024
More than 300 participants from academics, science and business from all over the world met on Tuesday 24th September at the Prague.bio Conference 2024. During the event, the biotechnology organization Prague.bio celebrated one year and welcomed global experts in technology transfer and biotech startups to Prague. Masaryk University was represented by a team from the Technology Transfer Office and the presentations included Dr. Ivo Kabelka from the Robert Vácha Research Group of CEITEC MU with the topic Peptide Killers of Bacteria.
This year's conference focused primarily on technology transfer to university spin-offs and building successful startups. Among the topics discussed was connecting academia with industry and exploiting the potential offered in this area. During the event, the best startup presentations were awarded, a forthcoming training academy for future spin-off managers was presented and 12 biotech startups from the Central and Eastern European region presented.
Masaryk University was represented by the Peptide Bacteria Killers technology, which is developing a new method of designing unique peptides that can selectively target and disrupt pathogen cell membranes without harming human cells. This method exploits the different lipid composition on the surface of human and pathogen cell membranes. Disruption of the protective function of the membranes by antimicrobial peptides (AMP) then leads to cell death of the pathogens.
