Spin-off at MUNI
What is a spin-off?
A spin-off is a company established to utilize and further develop a university’s intellectual property into a product or service applicable on the market. These are usually small or medium-sized enterprises, in whose activities the original creators of the intellectual property are often involved. The company may also agree with the university on the use of its laboratories or the provision of services. If the company does not have sufficient resources to implement its own investment plans, the entry of an investor may be considered.
Why is it beneficial to have a spin-off?
- financial benefits for the university (from an ownership stake in the company or from licensing)
- financial benefits for the creators of the intellectual property
- an easier path for bringing a product to market through a company rather than directly through the university
- a company with spin-off status has open doors to cooperation with the university
MUNI Spin-off Platform
Since September 2021, Masaryk University has operated a spin-off platform that creates a contact and communication environment connecting MUNI spin-off companies with the university. Both sides have much to offer each other. The platform facilitates networking, closer cooperation, and effective support for technology transfer and commercialization.
Membership in the platform is open to MUNI spin-off companies either upon their establishment or through the awarding of spin-off status.
